Strengths: Free. Easily better than most other free sync-backup apps. Works fine on my USB drive. Maybe lucky76 meant USB flash drive. Haven't tried that myself. Does drive to drive, unlike Comodo. 5 stars when compared with other freeware.
Weaknesses: No unicode support. Most free apps have this.
Overall Evaluation: Unicode support does seem like a common freebie, so SyncBack should consider adding it to the freeware version. Some characters in file names cause errors and won't backup (finishes the rest of the backup though). Sonic Mayhem's site (which has lazy 8s in title) won't backup from Favorites. It will work if I use Karen's Replicator or SyncToy 2 (both freeware). SyncToy 2 is very uneven in its performance so I dumped it (one job would backup 50 seconds, stall for 6 minutes, and do this repeatedly until the backup finished). Karen's Replicator has a little higher learning curve, can take a little longer than SynBack in some cases, and enables Indexing Service (WindowsXP) on the destination drive every time it syncs (takes less time that way). Other than that it's a good alternative to SyncBack. In fact Karen's Replicator focuses on CPU (only one core) while SyncBack focuses on RAM. If there isn't enough free RAM, SyncBack won't work on larger backups. I have not experienced this issue. I have 2GB RAM and have backed up jobs managing as much as 180GB. Of course, it didn't backup 180GB, just the differences (at first around 20GB). I think the footprint got to around 120MB. Don't use memory intensive apps while doing a backup and you should be fine. Karen's Replicator also uses Global exceptions whereas SyncBack has to be configured for each job. I took some cues from Replicator and applied some global exceptions to the jobs in SyncBack (each handles a little differently though). I'm still not settled on one or the other. I recommend you try both. They are easily the best freeware Sync-Backup apps I've found (many others just plain suck). BTW, go to the author's site for the latest version. PCWorld is not doing a good job keeping files updated.

Strengths: Can setup backup tasks; can schedule the backups; can backup or synchronize; can copy all files or only changed files - in other words, highly configurable to my needs.
Weaknesses: None found yet. I suppose if I stretch to make up a weakness, it is that I have to have the computer turned on while it runs.
Overall Evaluation: Imagine my dismay when I purchased a large external hard drive on sale, and found it came with no software to automate the backups. I did some searching, and found SyncBack. It does a fantastic job and everything (and more) that I need it to do!

Strengths: Easy to use. Setting up Groups to backup critical files in different locations. All the options available for straight backups, different types of sync's and my favorite scheduling backups everyday - don't have to worry about it!!
Weaknesses: No imaging but that is not what I needed.
Overall Evaluation: I have been using this program for 2 years and I love it!!!! Never had a problem and never missed a critical backup!!

Strengths: Does what it says. Program seems stable.
Weaknesses: Would be nice to be able to expand/shrink directories in the selection window.
Overall Evaluation: The guy that gave it 1 star...sour grapes. This product is FREE, does what it says, and works just fine. Sure, it could be improved, but this is the FREE version. Want more? Pay to upgrade or get another program! Sheesh!

Duration of ownership: 1 Days
Strengths: Free with limited functionality
Weaknesses: This is what the freebie does NOT do. - Copy open/locked files (XP/2003/Vista) - Fast Backup feature that greatly reduces backup time, especially over networks - Smart Synchronization - Zip compression that has no limit on the number and size of files - WinZip compatible 256-bit AES encryption - Completely new FTP engine that supports the latest FTP features, e.g. MODE Z compression and SSL/TLS encryption - Complete control over which files and folders to backup - Fully Unicode so it can copy files with filenames in any language
Overall Evaluation: IT would be nice if the reviewer has mentioned the above limitations along with his glowing hype. If you want a great app for free, I recommend Revo Uninstaller, which is what I used to completely uninstall this scamware.
