Editorial Review of WinZip Standard

You don't need WinZip anymore. Windows has perfectly good zip file support. But WinZip adds true encryption, some better compression algorithms, and several nice features. The new WinZip 12 adds decent photo compression and a few other tricks.

This review is based on the Standard version of WinZip 12. PC World has also reviewed the much classier WinZip Pro 12. Upgrades are $15 Standard and $25 Pro.

Photos seldom compress well because .jpg files are already compressed. But WinZip has found ways to compress them further, shrinking them by as much as 20 percent (WinZip claims to have reached 25%, but I haven't seen it). That's about 200MB saved for every gigabyte of photos. But be warned: This type of compression loses backward compatibility.

What else can it do? Version 12 also improves WinZip's already versatile zip-and-mail features, letting you zip and mail a few select files from within a .zip archive. And you can now use WinZip to extract files from an .iso image file.

But the Standard version won't do a lot that's in WinZip Pro. It won't import photos from your camera, rotate them, or show them to you in thumbnails or a slideshow. It doesn't support FTP. And you can't easily turn it into an automated backup program. Luckily, this download starts as a 30-day trial of Pro and then downgrades to a 15-day trial of Standard. You'll have the chance to try them both.
