As part of my recent migration to a new PC, I needed to find the product keys for various programs I was planning to reinstall. Easier said than done. Fortunately, I found a sweet utility that saved me hours of rummaging through boxes. Magical Jelly Bean's Keyfinder quickly and efficiently finds the product keys for installed programs, then lets you print them for safekeeping.

It's compatible with all versions of Windows and can dig up the keys for your operating system, Office apps, and various other programs. On my machine it found keys not just for Windows XP and Office 2003, but also for Command and Conquer: Generals (best RTS game ever, if you want my opinion).

Keyfinder is fast, free, and incredibly handy. It doesn't even require installation. I recommend it not just for those migrating to new PCs, but for anyone who wants to keep a hardcopy of important product keys.

Description of Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder

The Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder is a freeware utility that retrieves your Product Key (cd key) used to install windows from your registry. It has the options to copy the key to clipboard, save it to a text file, or print it for safekeeping. It works on Windows 95, 98, ME, NT4, 2000, XP, .NET, Office 97, and Office XP. This version adds support for multiple installations of Office and the ability to change the Windows XP, 98, and ME installation key.

Strengths: Immediately found product keys as described in product file

Weaknesses: Found only keys for MS apps and one accessory; did not find keys for other non-MS apps installed on computer

Overall Evaluation: good program if you only intend to transfer OS to another computer; no help if transferring other programs or drivers

Weaknesses: Not too sure

Overall Evaluation: Satisfied since it found exactly what i was looking for...The MS OFFICE 2007 keys that I forgot to write down when I purchased for my daughter in college.

Strengths: it's free and doesn't appear to contain any viruses.

Weaknesses: It only found 2 keys, for the XP OS and MS Office. My NIS security app informed me it was trying to monitor keystrokes.

Overall Evaluation: Sorry, not recommended, would instead recommend using Belarc Advisor (also free for personal use) which found 25 keys, albeit some of limited usefulness.

Weaknesses: Only captured Windows OS and MS Office keys out of the numerous programs I have installed.

Overall Evaluation: Very limited usefullness.

Strengths: No installation and is very fast. Great item to keep on a USB drive.

Weaknesses: May not find all software but will find majority.

Overall Evaluation: Nice little application with small size. I am a very experience PC user and I would recommend this. No virus or trojans here!
