If you're looking for something a tad more versatile (especially for voice) and a tad easier to use than the Windows Sound Recorder, YoGen Recorder (nee AudioMagic Recorder) might fill the bill. With a friendlier, bitmapped interface in place Sound Recorder's tiny buttons, it's definitely a boon for older or less capable eyes. It also loads and saves files in the .vox format that's big in the telephone and voice memo industry in addition to the usual .mp3, .wav, and .wma file types.

Beyond that, the notable features are voice-activated recording (press record and the program waits until it senses input) and ability to split saved files at defined intervals. For instance, if you're loading a long Vox file that you know has a series of 30 second messages, you can re-save it as multiple 30-second files. Some will find this ability extremely handy; Most won't care.

Note: This demo version records clips up to one minute long. To record longer segments, you must buy the full version.
