Ever unsatisfied with the icons that come with your version of Windows? Thought about messing with the icons in other Windows programs? IconCool has a suite of utilities for just that task. The entry-level utility in this suite is called IconCool Editor.
IconCool Editor can not only edit any Windows XP or Vista icon and create new icons, it also includes many royalty-free icons to use instead. The main interface of IconCool Editor is a large pixel grid--48 x 48 pixels, usually--that allows for detailed icon editing with a standard paint program's range of tools along the left.
The fact that IconCool Editor works with Vista is a nice touch. That means that regardless of the operating system, users of this program are free to extract and tweak any icons they wish.
IconCool Editor also works with Web graphics. Fans of cascading style sheets will find this editor highly useful for all the smaller graphical elements that CSS uses across many Web sites simultaneously. Larger graphical pieces, however, will require a more robust graphics editor such as Photoshop.
Note: This is a 30-day trial version. Upgrading provides access to 500 royalty-free Vista icons. The vendor did not give details of any other differences.
