Editorial Review of IconCool Editor

Ever unsatisfied with the icons that come with your version of Windows? Thought about messing with the icons in other Windows programs? IconCool has a suite of utilities for just that task. The entry-level utility in this suite is called IconCool Editor.

IconCool Editor can not only edit any Windows XP or Vista icon and create new icons, it also includes many royalty-free icons to use instead. The main interface of IconCool Editor is a large pixel grid--48 x 48 pixels, usually--that allows for detailed icon editing with a standard paint program's range of tools along the left.

The fact that IconCool Editor works with Vista is a nice touch. That means that regardless of the operating system, users of this program are free to extract and tweak any icons they wish.

IconCool Editor also works with Web graphics. Fans of cascading style sheets will find this editor highly useful for all the smaller graphical elements that CSS uses across many Web sites simultaneously. Larger graphical pieces, however, will require a more robust graphics editor such as Photoshop.

Note: This is a 30-day trial version. Upgrading provides access to 500 royalty-free Vista icons. The vendor did not give details of any other differences.

IconCool Editor is a powerful icon editor to edit icons, cursors and web graphics. It comes with all the functions for creating and editing ICO, CUR, ANI, ICL, GIF, JPG, BMP, EMF, WMF, TGA and WBMP image files. In addition, it offers more than 50 image filters, including Blurring, Sharpening, Embossing, Diffusing, Color Balance... as well as 20 image effects, including Linear Gradient, Redial Gradient, Rectangular Gradient, Wave, 3D Shadow, 3D Button, Text Gradient Effects, Noise, Arbitrary Rotation and more. IconCool Editor is also a smart image capturing tool can be used to capture images of various sizes from desktop or any other software. You can convert images in 25 formats to icons, You can extract icons from EXE, DLL, ICL, OCX or any other files and then edit or re-save them. In addition, it offers a 100-level Undo/Redo function, support for non-standard icons sizes and more. Now it supports Vista icon editing and modifying. A powerful icon maker, icon creator, small image editor and small graphics maker.

Duration of ownership: 1 Days

Strengths: It actually runs on Vista

Weaknesses: The uninstall program does not work and you have to take everything out manually, including editing the registry

Overall Evaluation: Not worth the money or the time to try it out.
