Editor's Review of BitDefender AntiVirus
BitDefender 9 Standard has been updated and renamed since PC World declared it a Best Buy in January 2006. It adds a few new features and retains a few problems -- beware that tech support may be a bumpy ride.
The interface, which garnered high praise previously, is essentially the same. There isn't an overwhelming number of options for the uninitiated, but if you want more control, it's there.
New features in version 10 are detection and removal of rootkits, real-time scanning of incoming Web traffic during browsing (if you set scanning to Aggressive), and improved virus detection.
To follow up on some earlier complaints about BitDefender's tech support, I checked with a BitDefender representative. He said that they have doubled their U.S. tech support staff. However, the phone tech support is in transition from toll service (in the 954 area code) to toll-free. Two out of the three times I called, no one ever answered after 7 minutes. The third time, the wait was 10 minutes -- good enough.
I did not lab test this version by purposely scanning an infected machine, but PC World will test it in future.
Note: The software warns you that it has not passed Windows XP compatibility testing. I had no problems when I clicked Continue, and BitDefender said this should be fixed soon.
