Description of FolderShare for the Mac

You're on your Mac at home, but that important file you need is on your Windows PC at work. If you've got FolderShare, you don't need to trek back to the office. FolderShare keeps data files synchronized between multiple computers, even between PCs and Macs. It works by allowing you to create your own private peer-to-peer network. Through this network, you can synchronize your files across multiple devices or share them with colleagues and friends.

FolderShare consists of two main components: My FolderShare, which allows you to share your data and retrieve it remotely via the Web; and FolderShare Satellite, which is the software you install on the devices you'd like to sync or share files with.

To share content, you simply select the content you'd like to share and invite others (via e-mail) to view your content. They will then be able to get at your shared files directly from their own devices. You can share files up to 2GB in size, and there are no limits on the amount of file transfers you can make, the vendor claims. FolderShare also offers a mobile access feature that allows you to access your computer--and the data it contains--from any Web browser.

To sync your data between multiple devices, you install FolderShare Satellite on each one, and itruns in the background when you're online. Whenever you update your shared or synced files, it automatically updates them on the other devices that are connected.

Microsoft has acquired FolderShare and says that the service will remain free. As of early March 2006, the company said it was "still determining the next steps" for FolderShare, but did say that it would discontinue the paid subscription service.

A version of FolderShare for Windows also is available.
