Editorial Review of DownThemAll

Note: This review addresses v1.1.1 of the software.

The DownThemAll addon for Firefox adds useful features for the inveterate downloader. Once installed, you'll get new options to use it instead of the regular Firefox download manager when you right-click a link or begin downloading a file.

The first option gives you the chance to change the filename (with a renaming mask) or the referrer URL, and also compare the download against a checksum (which is sometimes provided by software makers for you to check the authenticity of a download). The second option, to use dTa OneClick, begins downloading the file immediately using default options.

You'll also find a new option in the Firefox Tools menu to download any or all of the elements on a given Web page. Select it, and you can quickly set filters to select from the images, archives, audio, video or software files on the page. Choose a download location and click Start to nab all the files you select.

DownThemAll can speed things up by allowing for multiple concurrent downloads. By default it downloads up to 4 files at the same time; you can change that in the addon preferences. You can also create custom filters, change when DownThemAll automatically removes files from the download list, and where it adds itself to option menus.

Although they offer the file for free, the DownThemAll makers request donations via Paypal.

Note: This link takes you to the vendor's site, where you can automatically install the file into your Firefox browser.
