Editorial Review of LaunchBar Commander

Launchbar Commander adds one or more configurable bars to the top of the screen that offers quick access to folders, programs and files. It sports many configuration options, but it's a sometimes tricky tool that's meant for power users.

After installing Launchbar Commander, you'll start with three default icons for accessing the Windows Control Panel, the My Documents folder and the Windows Start menu. A pull-down arrow next to each drops down submenus with files and subfolders in the My Documents folder, for instance.

Your easiest option to add shortcuts to additional folders, files or programs is to simply drag and drop them from Windows Explorer onto the bar. If you open up the program's configuration, you can dig into some advanced customization, such as creating menus with multiple shortcuts inside, options to only show files within a given folder that match a particular expression, or creating additional docks. But working with the program's configuration, instead of simply dragging and dropping items onto the bar, can prove challenging. It's not made to be quick and easy for the average user.

Launchbar Commander is free to use, but if you like the software its author requests donations at DonationCoder.com.

If you're a power user looking for a highly customizable launch utility and don't want much eye candy, Launchbar Commander might be for you. If you're after a simpler and flashier app, you might try Stardock's ObjectDock.
