    Duration of ownership: 2 Weeks

Strengths: Very simple user interface, just install and use

Weaknesses: None, it synced everything it was supposed to

Overall Evaluation: SyncToy 2.1 is a free application that synchronizes files and folders between locations two of the current downloads from Microsoft’s website are SyncToySetupPackage_v21_x64.exe SyncToySetupPackage_v21_x86.exe I installed this on two of my machines. The I5 quad core with Win 7 Pro 64bit (v21_x64.exe) and an older laptop (v21_x86.exe) I have several back up devices for large backups and a 32GB thumb drive plugged into a hub for smaller backup jobs that regularly get copies of files. I synced a main file on the thumb drive (5.29GB/2187 folders/11,939 files) to both machines flawlessly with do errors, I’m just sorry I didn’t time it. I was impressed at how simple it was to setup. Just select a right folder, a left folder and the way you wish to sync the files. For me it was synchronize because I wanted the files the same on both machines. SyncToy creates a folder pair file which you give a name to so this can be run again with just a click. If you are upgrading from an older version make sure you read the **CRITICAL** upgrade warning otherwise you will probably be losing some information. There are some prerequisites to install first and more advanced users may want to read up and schedule SyncToy using the operating system since there is no built in interface.

    Duration of ownership: 6 Months

Strengths: It does sync. easy-to-understand interface

Weaknesses: Scheduled run of batch file won't actually sync the files. It runs, notes which files to sync, but won't actually sync them

Overall Evaluation: FreeFileSync is a much better option if a scheduled sync is desired. Runs reliably via the Scheduler

    Duration of ownership: 3 Years

    Strengths: simple to use, bulletproof

Weaknesses: somewhat slow if the sync is large

Overall Evaluation: I use this to move files to portable drives or thumb drives as off-site back up of my music and photos. It is flawless, simple, and free!

    Duration of ownership: 2 Weeks

    Strengths: Simplicity

Weaknesses: Can be slow at first

Overall Evaluation: I'm revising my first review. While the app did get hung up on seemingly nonsensical things and literally stay there for 20 minutes (multiple times), it ultimately delivered. I run it several times a day, backing up local drive to external HD. Seems to work well now. The initial cross matching took about 6 hours--far longer than a simple copy from one drive to another.
