Editorial Review of Darwinia Demo 2

Veteran gamers will appreciate how this genre-bending action/real-time strategy game seems familiar, yet fresh. The game pays homage to favorite arcade and console games of the 1980s, visually and thematically, but the graphics and enigmatic gameplay are assuredly 21st-century.

The premise of the game is simple but engrossing: The little green men who inhabit the self-contained digital universe of Darwinia are being threatened by a viral red menace. Save them you must. The Darwinians may be 2-D, but they are sentient and evolving, insists Dr. Sepulveda, who built Darwinia on a network of '80s-era home computers. You use existing aspects of the Darwinia program to stave off various incarnations of the red threat, from Virii to flying centipedes called Soul Destroyers. Your primary tools are Squads you create for combat missions, Engineers for reprogramming infected equipment and repurposing the souls of dead Darwinians, and Officers to command larger forces. One caveat: Don't be fooled by the retro look and minimalist interface. Under the hood, Darwinia is a resource-hungry app that may run slow or experience hiccups on a system that isn't optimized for gaming. A PDF manual available at the Darwinia site suggests ways to minimize the problem.

This demo features just a handful of levels, but one of them is not available in the full version of the game. An introductory tutorial provides backstory while teaching you how to control elements. Introversion is currently at work on a multiplayer version of Darwinia, which they are calling Multiwinia. They expect to release it in 2008.
