Editorial Review of Clickster

Everyone loves getting something for free. With Clickster you get a double dose: This free program searches the Web for free MP3 music files from your favorite artists, and delivers them to your desktop. Clickster's developer, Robert Palmer, insists that there's no copyright issues to worry about, since the MP3s that Clickster accesses are free files stored on Web sites. As long as you don't share the files, you're safe.

That said, "free" does have its price. The interface isn't very well designed, and the touted ShoutCast Internet radio features didn't work in my tests. There's no in-program Help system, so be sure to read the documentation online before you use Clickster for the first time, or you will quickly become confused.

Once you figure out how to use Clickster, you can quickly search for MP3s from your favorite artists, or of particular songs. You can listen to a track from within the program before downloading it, or click the Safe Browser button to take a look at the Web site from whence it came. You can download up to three tracks at a time, even while Clickster is finding more files. Note that despite Palmer's claims, Clickster doesn't necessarily speed up downloads: Files downloaded at my connection's usual speed, no faster.

Clickster lets you build Playlists that you can embed into your own Web pages--complete with a media player. Creating a Playlist is simple, but I didn't try embedding it into a Web page. Since the resulting Playlist is a simple XML file, however, it's probably fairly straightforward to get it onto your own site.

Basically, Clickster functions as an MP3 search engine, streams files just fine, and lets you download supposedly legal MP3s for free. Its lack of in-program playlists and album information could turn off some music aficionados, however.

Clickster is the essential application for every lover of music. Clickster enables you to easily search for and download mp3 files from the Internet in a totally legal and safe environment. Because Clickster sources mp3's which are hosted on web servers, you can expect download speeds which put P2P networks to shame. With currently over 30 million tracks available to download (and growing), we're certain Clickster will be able to locate the music you really want to listen to and there are no dead/broken links. Of course, the good news about Clickster doesn't stop there. Users can easily compile Playlists of mp3's which they have found online, configure their own media player and in two clicks of the mouse, Clickster will deliver the code for you to Embed your Playlist and Media Player into any webpage, blog or MySpace area. That's right! No hosting and no downloading! Lovers of Internet Radio from ShoutCast (www.shoutcast.com) will already be familiar with the excellent CD quality music which can be accessed from any of the thousands of broadcasters available. Clickster not only allows you tune into any of these radio stations, but offers a full Stream Ripping feature. Just click on the Record Stream button and Clickster will rip every track broadcast and save it as a separate mp3 file directly to your PC; complete with Artist and Track name. Clickster will even save these ripped tracks directly to your iPod or mp3 player and because Clickster records these tracks directly from the stream and not your sound card, the excellent sound quality is preserved and there is no corruption from any other sounds your PC may make while recording. Clickster is without rival in providing the most comprehensive listings of mp3 tracks to be found on the Net. In addition to installing Clickster on your PC, it can be installed or copied onto a Flash Drive and run from there.

Duration of ownership: 1 Years

Strengths: It use to work great. I found Can't Take My Eyes Off You by Muse and some other hard to find (back in 2008).

Weaknesses: It doesn't work at all anymore. Software starts fine. Seems to connect to something for data, but no results are shown, even for popular songs.

Overall Evaluation: I have this installed on three computers, all running XP. No results have been yielded on a single search since early 2009. If you have the same problem, please post in a review.

Strengths: NONE!!!! I would NEVER buy this program, because of popups EVERY FEW MINUTES to buy the Pro version.

Weaknesses: Nag screen pop up every few MINUTES to buy the PRO version. STAY AWAY from this program!!!!! Run Away, RUN AWAY, RUN AWAY VERY FAST!!!!!

Overall Evaluation: SHAME on PCWorld for recommending this program!!!!! I expect better from PCWorld!!!!!

Duration of ownership: 2 Weeks

Strengths: Very easy to install, performs searches quickly, and seems to have excellent play back quality.

Weaknesses: Non so far.

Overall Evaluation: It's so easy to use, it requires no lengthy tutorial. I've run extensive security scans after each and every use, and have found no signs of excessive malware or viruses.

Strengths: Find, virtually, any song with this software.

Weaknesses: It downloads things from the internet so who knows what viruses could come with it

Overall Evaluation: Great piece of software. However, not completely trustworthy.
