Editorial Review of Fly Guy

Fly Guy is another game with a character who soars without need for balloons, planes, or feathers. Yet it and Cloud could hardly be more different from each other.

If Cloud is New Age, then Fly Guy is old age, and I mean that in the best way. Defying today's 3D photorealistic games, Fly Guy consists of black-and-white line drawings that look as if they had been done by James Thurber.

Fly Guy, a balding, portly man in a suit with pants hitched up, looks 30ish the decade, not the age. He starts off bored, waiting at a bus stop. But as soon as you start playing with the arrow keys, he rises in the air with a gracefulness that belies his every pudge.

As a sprightly piano plays on the sound track, you guide Fly Guy among the clouds, a duck, an ever wise holy man, a boxer, and an alien flying a flying saucer, with whom Fly Guy trades some guitar licks. There?s not a whole more to it?a few surprises and more creatures and objects floating through the air--or water. It depends. It has the look of an elaborate, interactive New Yorker Cartoon.

The whole experience is so wry and laid back that is makes Cloud seem as frenetic as a Jim Carrey character. Anyone who plays games a lot would like to be a game designer. Now you can achieve your goal while enjoying a nice plate of spaghetti marinara. Again we have a college to thank for the opportunity, but instead of the escapist world of Cloud, youre immersed in something more down to earth.
