Strengths: Very thorough. Can schedule scans. Easy to 'set and forget'
Weaknesses: Pop-up ads can get a little annoying. Does not actively scan e-mail attachments prior to downloading.
Overall Evaluation: For the longest time, I have been flip flopping as to which free antivirus software is the best between AVG and Avast. Both are great but I found that with both programs, I was getting many false positives while a few (mind you...it is very, very few) viruses were still getting through. In addition to this, you can't schedule regular scans using Avast (although the interface is really slick!). So, I was looking around at various review sites and found this one. It does everything that I need an antivirus program to do: it does a thorough job, monitors my system, scans on boot-ups, and runs scheduled scans. The only drawback is that it does not scan my incoming e-mail attachments but this causes me little pain as I have another application doing that for me. There is also an annoying pop-up ad that occurs everytime you update the program asking you to upgrade. A simple click on 'OK' makes it go away...until the next update. However, despite these two very minor drawbacks, I would highly recommend this software. As far as I am concerned it is the BEST free antivirus software you can get!
