Duration of ownership: 2 Years
Strengths: Easy to use, Strong engine has detected numerous viruses in downloads and even some things I burned to CDs after using another (PAID) antivirus!! Updates often. MUCH better than Mcafee! (which as an IT pro, I don't recommend using - you hear that Dell??)
Weaknesses: oversimplified user interface, annoying default "update downloaded" voice, That's about it.
Overall Evaluation: Great product, easy to use, Very thorough! One of the best freeware antivirus programs out there, rivals paid antivirus programs, and perfect in a pinch. It's what I install on my friends' machines when I do pro bono consulting.

Strengths: fast, accurate detections, detects what others don't, easy to use, doesn't slow down your computer, free,
Weaknesses: no boot scan option
Overall Evaluation: AVIRA and AVAST are the best AV software. I don't know what the PC World reviewer was doing when they reviewed this product. There is an email scanner in the free version. I have seen AVIRA and AVAST detect virii that others missed. Norton and McAfee slow down your computer to a useless state. AVIRA and AVAST do not effect your computer's speed as they scan in the background. The reviewer must have missed this too. AVIRA and AVAST both update themselves automatically. There are no features missing in the free versions that are necessary for individual use (as opposed to commercial use). I used to recommend AVG but the free version does not include the rootkit detection which I feel is critical. The only thing that makes AVAST one step better than AVIRA is the boot time scan but AVIRA still detects more than AVAST. I am not your average user. I download virii and test these programs. My business is to tune-up and remove virii from home computers. If you are paying for an anti-virus program then you are paying too much. I recommend AVIRA and AVAST. Your choice, flip a coin. The reviewer for PC world sounds like she is on someone else's payroll.
