Strengths: FontCreator makes it incredibly easy to create a font from images. You need the ability to scan your penmanship, and then create a 300-by-300 pixel file, which the program imports. Once you have these image files, building a font is as simple as navigating to the corresponding file, then fiddling with it to tweak its appearance. Once you've imported the upper- and lowercase alphabet, numbers, and special characters, you can generate a font file compatible with either PC or Mac.
Weaknesses: Detailed menus and technical lingo---kerning, threshold sliders, smooth filters---make FontCreator better suited to the graphic designer rather than the casual user. But if you have a scanner and want to create an entirely made-up alphabet, a-la Lord of the Rings, or flatter the grandparents with a 'handwritten' note from your preschooler, it couldn't be easier and quicker. Although the full version costs a steep $65, you may just want to plan ahead and complete your alternative alphabet font before the 30 day evaluation period expires.
Overall Evaluation: Looking for that special something to punch up that bake sale flyer or wedding invitation? A custom font, made using FontCreator Home Edition, might just do the trick. FontCreator allows you to create TrueType fonts from scratch, or modify existing fonts. But be warned: Generating an entirely new font is not for the faint of heart or the short of time. While you can easily import scanned images of handwritten letters in .bmp, .jpg, or .gif image formats, there's quite a steep learning curve involved in modifying them. You can also hand-draw the letters directly into the program if you have a graphics tablet or steady mouse hand, but to call this the Home Edition belies the complexity of the task.
