Editorial Review of Secunia PSI

One of the best ways to protect your PC is to keep all your software up-to-date. Patching over security holes blocks online attackers who like nothing more than exploiting old software flaws to surreptitiously install Trojans and other malware. The free Secunia Personal Software Inspector makes it easy to find and fix old programs on your PC, even those that lack automatic update features.

Secunia PSI scans your computer to find out what versions of what software you have installed, and it reports on which might contain known security holes. But the excellent app doesn't stop there. Secunia PSI also provides clickable links to download available patches or program updates, which makes updating most software a snap. Other helpful icons can open the program's folder, bring up online references for any security advisories, and perform other useful tasks.

Less technical users can opt for a simple interface mode that lists only easy-to-patch software. But it's worth trying the advanced interface, which displays a wealth of information about your installed software. The latest version includes a handy "Secure Browsing" tab that reports not only on your browser version(s), but also on any plugins, ActiveX controls, Firefox add-ons and other extras.

By default, Secunia PSI will start with Windows and report on new software or newly discovered security holes. Gamers and anyone else who wants to conserve system resources can turn off those options using the settings tab in the advanced mode, and instead run manual scans.

Secunia PSI won't do away with the need to run a good antivirus program and firewall on your PC. But it provides a solid layer of free protection that no PC should do without.

Duration of ownership: 2 Years

Strengths: Keeps your programs updated from a security standpoint (only); it is not a "FileHippo" updater

Weaknesses: Sometimes lists insecure programs more than once, and doesn't always recognize that you have downloaded updates.

Overall Evaluation: Very good -- enough that I will continue using it -- but some bugs still need to be worked out.

Strengths: Good when/if it works.

Weaknesses: Not always correct. can be misleading.not 'user' friendly. user should be 'technically aware'

Duration of ownership: 2 Years

Strengths: Great idea when it works.

Weaknesses: Interface takes forever to load when it works. Last 2 versions will not run at all. False positives. Will sometimes correct when you rescan but not always. Seems poorly written (I am a retired programmer).

Overall Evaluation: Its ok when it works correctly but I use other similar programs that always find different problems. I would never let it load at startup, just use it once a month if you have dialup.

Strengths: Just seems to work well in th background. After a few weeks I had 100% score and have kept that ever since. Informs when it is updating.

Duration of ownership: 1 Months

Strengths: Not real sure. Had me uninstall an old Adobe update I still had. Every thing else was good. I guess. Seemed useful. Every time I changed something it was checking me.

Weaknesses: Every time I opened it it says I have to change some scripting buttons for IE. Don't use IE and avoid it at all cost. Even it says IE is unsecure browser. Too complicated for me.

Overall Evaluation: Seemed cool but couldn't deal with the internet option prompt all the time. Couldn't understand the duplicate listings either. Uninstalled it for now.

Strengths: None with all the problems

Weaknesses: Several listed below

Overall Evaluation: I was an early adopter of Secunia PCI and this program is still SNL software; Not yet ready for prime-time. I cannot see how this program would of benefit to any user with all the remaining problems with it. Let me detail them: Double entries for the same vulnerable program. PSI cannot handle portable applications. Lists vulnerabilities based upon the full version. A program Install executable is listed as vulnerable and installed program. Deleted executables, like portable applications or deleted installation programs, located in the Recycle Bin listed as installed and vulnerable programs. Really?! Why is PSI scanning the Recycle Bin? You cannot tell PSI not to scan a folder containing portable applications or other applications it cannot handle due to limited programming foresight on the part of Secunia. Instead you have to create ignore rules for each and every program. I get better results from FileHippoâs update scanner than Secuniaâs. Avoid PSI until a finished product is actually released.
