Here's a very good way to optimize your use of Internet Explorer. It blocks ads of all kinds, including banners, Flash-based, and embedded. There are plenty of configuration options, including telling it to display ads from specific domains or pages. If you turn on the Flash blocker, you won't be able to view YouTube videos, so you may want to tell the program to only display Flash from specific domains.
