Editorial Review of ISO Recorder for Vista and Windows 7

Here's one of those one-trick-pony downloads that does one thing only, but does it exceedingly well. It lets you burn .iso files to CD or DVD--and if you don't know what .iso files are, you most likely don't need this program. But if you do know what they are, this program is extremely useful.

An .iso file is single, large file that when burned to a CD or DVD contains many files, a file system, and data, and that can be used to install an operating system. For example, Windows Vista betas were made available as .iso files, and if you wanted to install the beta, you had to download the .iso file, burn it to DVD, and then boot from the DVD to install Vista. Sometimes .iso files can also be used for other purposes, such as creating music or video, but this program won't create images of audio or video CDs.

The program will create .iso files as well as burn them. It integrates itself directly inside Windows Explorer. Right-click an .iso file, then follow the instructions to burn it to CD or DVD.

Note: This link takes you to the vendor's site, where you can download the version of the software appropriate to your system. To download the XP/Server 2003 version, see our review of version 2.
