Editorial Review of UpdateStar

UpdateStar fills a need I never knew I had--always a useful discovery! This freeware program compares your software against a large database of programs, and reports on any outdated versions. Further, leads you to links where you can download the most current iteration of the software. Said links go back to official sites; this is not a tool for finding 'warez', nor does it link to cracked or unprotected files.

UpdateStar quickly scanned my hard drive and provided a list of my version, and the current version, of most (though not all) of my software. The database is large but by necessity incomplete--nothing can track everything. After that, all I needed to do was click the software I wished to update, and I received quick links back to the appropriate download page.

It is possible to purchase upgrades/licenses through UpdateStar, and presumably that is how they make their money. However, this is not required to benefit from UpdateStar's primary feature of scanning versions and reporting outdated software.

While UpdateStar promises "No spyware" (and Norton confirms), the fact is that it does gather information about your software to help update their database. According to their FAQ and help file, all information gathered is completely anonymized and unable to be used for any purpose other than that for which it is intended.
