Editorial Review of One-click BackUp for WinRAR (Shareware version)

The freeware version of Acritum's One-click Backup for WinRAR is a handy add-on for users that already own Rarlab's venerable, feature-filled $29 WinRAR archiving utility. OCB implements scheduled backups to local media using WinRAR's RAR and Zip compression, password protection, data integrity tests, authentication, parity information, and self-extracting archives.

You can also automatically run programs before and after each backup as well as specify the maximum number of archives to keep, or simply continue to update a single archive. The program will even write to CD/DVD. The GUI is plain but serviceable and the plentiful options will likely confuse users without WinRAR experience till they read the well-written, informative help file.

As nicely as OCB performed in my testing, the $50 shareware version, which adds network support and kills the freeware version's splash screen, is a tad pricey unless you're an IT type who loves WinRAR. Both the free and the shareware versions of One-click BackUp for WinRAR are in this installation package, so you have your choice of which version to install.

Note: WinRAR must be installed before this software.
