Editorial Review of Turbo Type

Hunt-and-peck typists have a new tool in their kit: Turbo Type adds a handy autocorrect feature to most text editors, including Microsoft Word, Notepad, and WordPad. Type two or more letters, and a transparent pop-up window appears with suggestions to choose from. The pop-up appears only when you're typing relatively slowly; if you're a fast typist, you may not see it often.

You can add your own words to the dictionary, and choose when the program offers suggestions (after two, three, or four letters or a Ctrl-Space) and how to accept suggestions (Enter key, Space, or Tab). You use your arrow keys to navigate the word list.

This free demo version runs for 3 hours consecutively, then needs to be restarted. Registering the software for $20 removes that limitation, causes the program to automatically load with Windows, provides e-mail support, and includes a learning mode.

Turbo Type is best suited for slow typists or folks who use the hunt-and-peck method. Fast typists may well be annoyed by the tool, which offers suggestions even when you name files or enter text in Web pages.
