Editorial Review of SpeedUpMyPC
Plenty of utilities will help you boost the performance of your PC by cleaning up unnecessary and out-of-date files. SpeedUpMyPC 2009 takes things a step further: It not only helps you clean up and optimize your PC, but also includes tools that allow you to monitor its performance. But those extra features don't come free: Where rivals like CCleaner and KCleaner are free, SpeedUpMyPC costs $30.
Once installed, SpeedUpMyPC scans your system and recommends tweaks to improve performance and free up space. Much like both CCleaner and KCleaner, it lists files that can be deleted, such as your browser cache and temporary files. It also lists changes that you can make to your browser, network connection, Windows installation, and Windows startup that will speed up your PC. While you can see a list of the suggested changes before you implement them, SpeedUpMyPC doesn't provide any explanation of its recommendations, so you're left on your own to figure out what the recommendations mean--and what possible risks the changes pose.
SpeedUpMyPC sports a slick interface that is really apparent when you use its PC monitoring features. A dashboard screen shows your CPU usage, memory usage, and network usage in odometer-like windows that fluctuate in real time. You can click on one of these odometers to see a graph that charts the same info or to access SpeedUpMyPC's performance-enhancing tools.
SpeedUpMyPC 2009 is available on its own, or as part of the $60 PowerSuite 2009, which also includes Uniblue's DriverScanner and RegistryBooster apps.
If you only need a quick PC cleanup, a free utility like CCleaner will likely meet your needs. But if you're looking for complete control over your PC's performance, SpeedUpMyPC puts you in the driver's seat.
