Editor's Review of VideoSpin Beta
The brighter companies out there realize that doling out a handy and free utility is a great way to create brand name awareness--and possibly sell you more stuff. Avid/Pinnacle, long-time purveyors of video-related products including Studio and Dazzle are doing just that with Videospin, a free video editor that's easy to use and surprisingly competent.
There's a lot more to Videospin than I thought there'd be. It automatically adds movies that it detects in you documents folder or wherever you point it, and there's a full timeline editor with video, audio, title, sound FX, and music. It also had automatic scene detect, a decent assortment of transitions and titles, and you can mix in photos--not things I'd necessarily expect in a free program.
How's Avid/Pinnacle going to make money? By selling you codecs. The built-in MPEG-2, Mpeg-4, and 2-channel Dolby are 15-day trials. How much after that? $15. That's not half bad for an intuitive, easy-to-use video editor. Even without those codecs you can still output to Windows Media, Sony PSP, and iPod. In the words of the Rocketeer and pretty much the only thing memorable about the eponymous movie: I like it.
