DNA is complex--it has to be, in order to specify the makeup of
every living thing from the simplest viruses to humanity itself.
Most educated people are aware of its spiral structure, but the
exact makeup of the molecule and how it works can remain baffling.
OnScreen DNA Lite allows a student (or any interested user) to
examine the structure of DNA in an intuitive fashion,
The program shows a sample strand of DNA, with the base pairs in
the lower window and a three-dimensional rendering of the molecule
in the primary window. The molecule can be rotated to view and
understand its structure, and each component can be clicked on to
show the chemical makeup. It is easy to see the correspondence
between the bases and the model.
In addition, OnScreen DNA Lite animates one of the key processes of
DNA--its ability to split and then rejoin. The animation makes the
process clear, as does the explanatory text. Many of the other
functions of DNA, such as transcription and replication, are
available in the paid version, OnScreen DNA Pro.
OnScreen DNA Lite is not a self-teaching course in biochemistry;
it is a useful teacher's aid and a way for students learning the
beginning of biology to visualize the shape and function of the DNA
molecule. It takes up far less space than the old stick-and-ball
models whose function it replicates and enhances.
Note: While the program will launch under Vista, performance
under Aero without an Open GL driver is extremely poor; OnScreen
Science has acknowledged this and is working on a fix.
