Editor's Review of MHX First Defense
MHX First Defense attempts to supplement--not replace--your antivirus program by attempting to identify and stop active malware processes on a computer.
With a few exceptions, every program, good or bad, displays one or more process names (you can view those currently running on your PC by bringing up the Windows Task Manager and clicking on the Processes tab). First Defense compares the names of processes currently running on your computer against a small list of known malware process names such as "nnqcouu.exe." If there's a match, it will attempt to stop the malware.
It's a valid but very limited approach. For one thing, malware authors regularly change the process name they use, and some malware will randomly select new process and file names. More important, there are millions of malware samples in the wild today, and MXH First Defense currently only looks for 313 process names.
MHX First Defense does offer a set of secondary tools that display a small amount of information about the system, memory and network resources, as well as change folder settings. The program also offers free online chat support, but the program wasn't able to establish a connection when we tried it. First Defense should work in conjunction with installed antivirus programs; it didn't cause any problems with Norton on our test PC.
While First Defense is free, its limited efficacy and very clunky interface don't compare to other, much more effective free antivirus tools such as those from Avira and AVG.
