Editorial Review of Directory Opus (64-bit)

Compared to the operating systems of old, Windows gives you a lot for free--a browser, a text editor, and a file manager, for example. All of them do their jobs, but there are other programs which can do them better. One oft-overlooked area for improvement is in the file manager tool, Windows Explorer. Directory Opus is a replacement for this program.

First off, users will want to use the "License Manager" (On the "Tools" menu) to request a 60-day certificate as soon as they begin using the program; this is free, and it eliminates irksome and frequent nag screens during the trial period.

Directory Opus is an astoundingly feature-rich program. A user can view multiple directories at once, and each view can be tabbed, allowing the easy juggling of many different slices of the file system. It is even possible to view a complex series of nested folders 'flat', showing all the files within. There are many different ways to view a given directory, from a 'power users' view with lots of information to a 'slide show' for seeing images.

By default, the program tightly integrates with Windows, replacing many of the default functions with its own tools, such as the built-in image and media viewer. To its credit, Directory Opus is very up-front about changing such defaults, and it queries the user in plain English during install about each switch.

The cost of this power is, as always, complexity. Directory Opus is a deep, rich, program, with many options and preferences screens. There is a lot to learn here in order to get the most out of the program. Extremely casual users will probably not find it worth their while, but those who maintain large hard disks or do a lot of file operations will find the power increase over Windows Explorer to be well worth the learning curve.

Note: This software comes in 32-bit and 64-bit versions. This is the 64-bit version, which is for PCs running 64-bit Vista. If your PC is running a different supported OS, please download the 32-bit version instead.
