Thankfully, version 3.8 fixes that with commands to download the last one, 100, ten thousand, etc. (no, there's no even one thousand) headers and I'm now finally considering retiring the competent-but-sometimes-buggy Xnews. Also swaying me are some great usability features Xnews lacks. Newsleecher displays message headers as only the names of files attached--which makes them much easier to peruse. There's an integrated file explorer. Related posts can be auto-selected, and you can organize newsgroups by category. There's also a Super Search service that performs ultra fast searches for articles of interest, though it's $10 extra per year. (The pricing on this page reflects the standard package.)
On the other hand, I still have a few Newleecher nits. There's no integrated message viewer: It simply launches the program associated with the type of file you download, even for generic USENET text messages. And there really should be a way to turn off the message filter without selecting the filter text and deleting it. But those are minor concerns, and there's already a 3.9 beta (available for registered users) that may address those concerns.Note: This link takes you to the vendor's site, where you can download the latest version of the software.
