Editorial Review of TeraCopy Pro Beta

Sick of Windows's brain-dead copy/move function, with its inaccurate time estimates and lack of control? TeraCopy Pro could be what you're looking for. This program, which integrates seamlessly with the Windows shell, can be used as an adjunct or a replacement for the Windows function. It allows you to pause operations, and it provides a lot more feedback on individual file transfers as well as the group operations. You can also select a destination for a move or copy operation directly from a drop-down menu instead of searching for it in Explorer--much like Windows Send To command--which I found extremely handy.

Code Sector claims TeraCopy is faster at copying files from physical disk to physical disk (not between partitions on a single disk), but in my limited testing this proved to be only partially true. Copying 34,593,444,618 bytes of large ISO images took TeraCopy 532 seconds compared to Window's 512 seconds, about a 5 percent slowdown. On the other hand, in a more common scenario, the built in Windows routine took a leisurely 152 seconds to copy a folder with a 7,977,364,902 byte mix of large and small files, while TeraCopy performed the same task in only 132 seconds--a 13 percent improvement.

Sadly, TeraCopy also quit with an error message the first time I ran the mixed folder copy test. It worked the second and third times--and no data appeared to be harmed--but for me to abandon the admittedly inelegant, but tried and true Windows copy/move routine, its replacement had better be as solid as the Rock of Gibraltar. Sadly, and I truly mean that, TeraCopy proved otherwise.
