Editorial Review of DK Finder
There's no good way to say this: Microsoft's built-in file searching mechanism in Windows XP is just terrible. So it's no surprise that tools like Google Desktop Search and Agent Ransack are popular alternatives. DKFinder also falls into that category, and it has some advantages over the competition. It's a speedier, more precise search than Agent Ransack, and a less CPU-intensive, more minimalist footprint than Google Desktop Search.
Initially, DKFinder creates an index of every file on your system, and this process can take a whileBut once the index is created, you can search for files, and narrow those results, using a wide range of criteria. And while you do have to periodically reindex your drive to make sure your results include the newest files on your hard drive, the program reindexes only those files newly created or updated since the prior indexing session--a process that takes less than a minute.
