Editorial Review of FeedBeast

FeedBeast delivers most of the expected features for any RSS reader worth its salt. It can import and export RSS feed subscriptions, quickly shift between views that change the display of your feed and article lists depending on your preferences, and display individual items in an IE-based tabbed browsing interface.

The app also brings in a few not-so-common extras, starting with an extensive start-up welcome and introduction to the program. There's also a Voice Announcement feature that uses the built-in Microsoft text-to-speech to read your feed titles and summaries, and you can teach it the correct pronunciation for things like 'RSS.'

You can also create custom, dynamic search feeds that search for keywords among your choice of a list of sites including eBay, Amazon, Wired and others. The results display like a feed, and you can subscribe to it as you would a regular feed to automatically see new search matches.

But along with these interesting features come some major limitations. For example, there's no current option for organizing your feed subscriptions into different folders like "Entertainment" or "Tech News." The developer says the feature is planned for the next release, but it's a glaring lack in version 1.5.

More important, the free trial version limits you to 15 feeds, or 20 if you allow it to display a banner with text ads below feed items. Though the full version currently costs only $5, FeedBeast faces stiff competition with a number of available free readers.
