Editorial Review of Thingamablog
Thingamablog is an interesting program which allows a user to create and maintain a blog without the use of remotely hosted dedicated blogging software or creating an account on a blogging site, such as Xanga or Livejournal.
The first and most important step is to set up the account. You must have FTP access to the site where you wish your account to reside. I found this the most confusing part of the process, and it took me several tries to get everything configured properly. A significant portion of the delay was due to Thingamablog's "Silence is Golden" philosophy on error reporting; I was only able to discern things weren't working properly by checking the log files.
Once the setup was done, though, the rest was easy. A WYSIWYG editor with all the basics--font, size, color, and so on--allows you to edit entries. A variety of style sheets are available, and can be swapped around at will. The actual HTML templates which are used to generate the pages are user-editable. The program allows the user to maintain multiple blogs across multiple sites, and can upload recent entries or regenerate the entire blog, as needed.
Stability is an issue. I was at first unable to connect to my FTP site (although other programs were connecting), and then, without my changing anything in the settings, it connected successfully a few days later. I also began to receive 'could not connect to database' errors after I had edited some blog entries, and needed to restart my computer in order to resume work.
Thingamablog has much to recommend it, especially for Internet-savvy, HTML-skilled users who can get the most out of it by working directly with the underlying templates and style sheets. Those who know what they want from a blog and do not or cannot rely on remotely hosted solutions will find the program worth checking out. Non-technical users can still get good use out of the program via its wizards and straightforward interface.
Note: This program is donationware. It is free to try, but the author accepts and encourages donations towards further development.
