Editorial Review of DeepBurner Pro

Though I rely on Nero for most optical disc chores on my main system, I've had the chance to use DeepBurner several times--mostly the free, non-Pro portable version I carry around on a thumb drive. It works reliably and it's great for basic chores like burning data discs, burning ISOs, and creating the odd audio CD.

The Pro version picks up where the Free version leaves off, adding the ability to burn video DVDs (from an existing .IFO/.VBO structure), create photo slideshow discs, burn from the command line, as well as perform disc-to-disc copies. For the most part, the Pro features worked well. However, trying to create a photo slideshow resulted in a series of "exception in EEFFACE" errors--one for every photo file I tried to add. What the error means and how it might've affected the entire project I can't account for. I grew so tired of them I simply gave up. I'm sure Astonsoft will correct the image handling and DeepBurner Pro will be stable shortly--they have confirmed that they plan to do so in version 2.0--but as of the time of this writing it's of no use for photo slideshows.

In the end, the Pro version of DeepBurner didn't change my mind about much. I'll still opt for the portable free version for light duty on my thumb drive and stick with Nero as well as Roxio's Easy Media Creator for the heavy lifting.
