Editorial Review of SoSure Private Backup

Online backup. Just do it. That's all the advice on the subject that need be given, unless it's to use one of the free services. Still, the 2GB (Mozy and Fabrik) to 5GB (Xdrive) of free space may not be enough for you, so then you must consider a service such as SoSure. Powered by IBM's Tivoli software (that actual engine that locates and sends the files across the wires), SoSure's tiered pricing for the non-business version is as follows: 3GB for $9 per month (as reflected above), 5GB for $13, 10GB for $23, 25GB for $49, 50GB for $38, 100GB for $136.

You may have noticed that even SoSure's 3GB plan costs more than Mozy or Fabrik's unlimited storage for $5 a month or even Amazon's S3 with its metered upload and download. This begs the question "What am I getting for all that extra cash?" Since all the competitors I mentioned have extremely reliable and redundant storage facilities, it's hard to say. Admittedly, SoSure is bit prettier than the aforementioned services. It's also extremely easy to use--like the competition. It follows a rule-based search for relevant files (e-mail, My Documents, your desktop, etc.) and includes them in your initial backup as well as but you can also include files manually so there's no lack of versatility. Restore is done from within the SoSure control panel instead Windows Explorer as with Mozy and Fabrik. And as with most other services, the client is free for the downloading, but useless without the service as it offers no local backup to a local hard disk or optical drive.

Other than the price, I have no complaints at all about SoSure. It installs easily, it's easy to use, and it works both quickly and well. But geez, that price...
