Editorial Review of SideSlide

SideSlide finds a special niche in the crowded program-launcher field. balancing the need for a big, icon-driven launch space with the need to use your desktop normally. This clever freebie is a large but nearly invisible strip at the edge of your screen--until you summon it with a mouseover.

Taking the visual approach, SideSlide creates "containers" instead of text boxes or plain links. These little windows can be left as is, or you can drag items out of them. Containers can hold almost anything, from desktop shortcuts to Web links to RSS feeds. You can write yourself notes or timed reminders, too.

Creating containers is refreshingly simple: You can use Control-C, click in an unoccupied part of the SideSlide window, or right-click for options. Whether you're a hotkey user or a right-click-and-explore type, SideSlide supports the way you work.

If I have any quibble about SideSlide, it's that the RSS feeds were occasionally a bit flaky on my XP SP3 machine. This problem didn't occur every time, though, and serious RSS users are better off with a dedicated RSS reader such as FeedDemon anyway.

All in all, SideSlide is a worthy competitor in the program launchers fray. And since it's free, there's certainly no harm in giving it a try.

Note: This program is donationware. It is free to try, but the author accepts and encourages donations towards further development.
