Editorial Review of Windows Live Mail
Windows Live Mail is the newest addition to Microsoft's e-mail lineup, and is the successor to Outlook Express (shipped in versions of Windows before Vista), and Windows Mail (which ships with Vista). It's very much like both of those programs, and shares with them the same pluses and minuses.
On the plus side: It's quite easy to use and to set up new accounts, and it includes lots of features for dressing up e-mail (such as using stationery, adding emoticons and pictures, changing background colors and font sizes, and so on). The program also lets you read RSS feeds and participate in newsgroups.
On the minus side, Windows Live Mail lacks higher-end features such as automatic filtering of incoming mail. It does, however offer encryption. But it doesn't include a calendar and to-do list. If you want that from Microsoft, you'll have to buy Outlook.
By the way, if you're thoroughly confused by all of Microsoft's e-mail software and services, join the club--so is the rest of the world. There's Windows Live Hotmail, which is Web-based access to e-mail, Windows Mail (this piece of software), Outlook Express, Windows Mail (in Vista), and of course Outlook. Windows Live Mail is similar to both Outlook Express and Windows Mail; neither Outlook Express nor Windows Mail will ship in future versions of Windows. Anyone who wants a free e-mail client in Windows 7 will have to download Windows Live Mail.
Note that when you install Windows Live Mail, it will make Live Search your default search engine in Internet Explorer, and MSN Home your default home page in Internet Explorer, unless you uncheck the appropriate boxes. If you don't want that to happen, remember to uncheck them.
