Editorial Review of Screamer Radio

The author of this excellent streaming Internet radio player/recorder accepts donations via Pay Pal, and if you're not a starving student you should consider it. Screamer Radio is easy to use, works well, and shows every sign of being a labor of love.

Screamer Radio's interface is simplicity itself. A small window featuring a menu, a status bar on the bottom, an information area, and buttons for previous, play, stop, next, record, volume, and mute are all you get. The program offers a ton of preset stations which are organized in a presets menu by genre, language, network and region. Whichever type you choose is added to the bottom of the menu so you can find it a bit more quickly.

Which brings me to my only real complaint (minor quirks aside) about Screamer Radio--browsing the station presets would be much easier via a collapsible tree, as with RarmaRadio. Screamer Radio's preset menu is rather difficult to navigate, though you can add stations to a separate favorites menu to ease the drudgery. The author acknowledges the situation, and the program's Web site has a nice little preset browser that you can invoke from the help menu. You can even visit the forum and ask to have your favorite station added to the presets. Other features include opening stations by URL, compression (actually normalization), and variable stereo separation.

Any criticism I make of Screamer Radio should be immediately forgotten. Ever since I discovered it, I've been using it exclusively. It boots much quicker than iTunes, and unlike iTunes, it lets you record stuff you like. That alone is worth throwing the man a buck or two. I also really like its multi-national approach and am listening to an Italian station in Switzerland as I write. Download it.

Note: If your station gives you a generic playlist (.pls) file for loading into iTunes or Windows Media Player, you can extract the URL with Windows Notepad for loading into Screamer Radio. This link takes you to the vendor's site, where you can download the latest version of the software.
