Editorial Review of Migratr

Avid shutterbugs, rejoice: If you've spent inordinate hours uploading your photos to one of the many popular photo sharing/hosting services, you no longer need to feel you're locked into the service you started with. Migratr is a free tool that can move entire photo gallery accounts from one service to another in just a few mouse clicks.

The tool supports photo hosting services at 23HQ, AOL Pictures, Faces.com, Flickr, Picasa Web, Phanfare, SmugMug, Zenfolio, and Zooomr, as well as self-hosted photo galleries that run under Menalto Gallery. The tool requires you either to log into the source and destination service through the browser or by entering your credentials into the application. Some sites will require you to provide Migratr with permission to manipulate your files. Migratr then downloads the entire archive of images from the source site to your hard drive, and when it's complete, uploads them to the destination site.

The tool can also be used as a general purpose photo uploading utility for any of the sites it supports. (The exception is AOL Pictures, which is slated to close on December 31, 2008; Migratr is only set up to download images from that service). For simplicity's sake, this is about the easiest tool of its kind I've ever seen, but if you have large photo archives, all that downloading and uploading will take a while.

Note: This program is donationware. It is free to try, but the author accepts and encourages donations towards further development.
