Editorial Review of KidZui

KidZui is a free child-safe Web browser for kids in kindergarten through eighth grade. Its colorful, easy-to-use interface is well designed, offering access to child-appropriate Web sites, games, photos, and videos. There are limited community functions, such as the ability to tag Web pages and images.

I enlisted my 8-year-old daughter in testing KidZui, and she pronounced it "cool"--the ultimate compliment. I felt entirely comfortable letting her navigate KidZui's offerings and play the games unattended, and she enjoyed herself thoroughly. The program offers useful parental controls, starting with the requirement that parents provide their e-mail addresses and approve the child's account. Parents even get a weekly report detailing their child's activities online.

My only gripe? Like some other free Web services for kids (Stardoll comes to mind), you can unlock the really cool features only by paying a membership fee--in this case a hefty $8 per month or $50 per year. Invitations to "Join Now" are everywhere on the site, prompting much begging and whining. I understand that these companies need to make money, but marketing so directly to children leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

That complaint aside, KidZui is a keeper. There are plenty of free activities to enjoy, and the numerous Web sites seem perfectly harmless. If you have children in your household, give this kid-safe browser a try.
