Editor's Review of 12Ghosts
When your OS could fit on a floppy, tool suites sprang up to fill the many gaps in the OS. A disk or two of tools took you beyond the limited features of the basic system. 12Ghosts (which actually contains 37 programs), is a return to those days, with mixed results.
You can run each 'ghost' (all of the program icons look like the ghosts from Pac-Man, which is cute, but goes against the function of an icon: to clearly identify what the program does) individually, or you can use the 'Tower' as a central control panel. From the Tower, you can see which ghosts are running, turn on or off auto-startup, and so on.
I tested many of the Ghosts which sounded most useful to me. Unfortunately, I had little real success. The most useful-sounding--a Ghost which would show the password you entered into a web site in plaintext, instead of as a row of asterisks--did not work with either Navigator or Explorer, at least not on the sites I tried, and I tried several. The Notepad replacement was clunky and unintuitive. The 'showtime' ghost did not work properly with Vista, overrunning the edges of the taskbar, and I could not find a way to change the font to something smaller. Furthermore, the help did not come up properly, possibly because I installed to a non-standard directory. I was able to open the help file manually.
Some of the tools may be very useful to those with specific needs. There is a tool to automatically open the registry to a particular key, which would be helpful to programmers doing registry edits or changes. There is a tool to save icon arrangements on the desktop, or restore them if they've been scrambled. There is a useful 'Information' tool which provides a variety of functions such as measurement conversions, Area and Zip code lookups, and common acronyms in different fields.
The price for the complete set is high for the mixed functionality and degree of specialization--at least for me. For other users with different needs, the 14-day trial should be enough to determine if any of the tools are sufficiently useful to justify the cost.
