    Duration of ownership: 3 Months

Strengths: Great security (100% local encryption), ability to save all old versions, ability to backup multiple computers and removable storage (i.e., USB drives)

Weaknesses: Interface not as pretty as some others

Overall Evaluation: I recently switched to SpiderOak for two main reasons: (1) SpiderOak offers increased security, (2) SpiderOak allows you to backup multiple computers and removable storage devices for free, (3) Local Copy feature, and (4) more free storage space. First, SpiderOak provides 100% local encryption of data before it is sent to the SpiderOak server, and they have a comprehensive Zero Knowledge Policy, which means they never have access to your data. In addition, they have an option for 2-Factor Authentication, which I appreciate. Second, a major selling point is that I can backup multiple computers AND removable storage (i.e., my USB drives). Third, SpiderOak has a Local Copy feature that will allow you to specify a local drive, a network folder, or your FTP or SFTP server as a secondary place to store the encrypted data blocks SpiderOak creates. "This location does not need to be secure as the data blocks will remain encrypted - just as they are stored in the SpiderOak Cloud. In addition to providing a local copy of the all of the data stored within SpiderOak, this option will drastically increase large restores and downloads as SpiderOak will check with the local copy before downloading a folder or file from the SpiderOak Cloud." Finally, in addition to the 2GB free storage that they advertise, you can get an additional 1GB bonus free for life (3GB total) using the following referral link: https://spideroak.com/download/referral/1e9129173b25d234d678926afa577c79 I would use DropBox or Box.net for simple file storage and sharing, but for backup of sensitive or personal data, I would use SpiderOak.

    Duration of ownership: 1 Months

Strengths: High security, Zero Knowledge encryption policy, 2-Factor Authentication, Good backup speed

    Weaknesses:

Overall Evaluation: I recently switched from Mozy (which I had been using since 2006) to SpiderOak. I have found SpiderOak's security features to be a compelling reason to make the change. (Mozy is not bad, but SpiderOak is simply superior.) The installation process was quick, and backup speeds are good. SpiderOak provides 2GB free storage, plus 1GB bonus free for life with the following referral link: https://spideroak.com/download/referral/24515ffa6eff79fd7e06a0c08d9e5253

    Duration of ownership: 2 Years

    Strengths: Inexpensive

Weaknesses: 1) Silently stops backing up files 2) Slow and incomplete support department

Overall Evaluation: At first glance SpiderOak seems like a good deal but as soon as something goes wrong you're in for trouble. Their support line is glacially slow and their software can easily stop backing up your files with no warning or notification.

    Duration of ownership: 2 Years

Strengths: Very resource friendly, fast uploading, keeps many copies of files, software seems to be coded solidly.

Weaknesses: Somewhat confusing to deselect files from being uploaded (you have to delete them from various places)

Overall Evaluation: I've been using Spideroak for a long while and am extremely pleased with it. It is more expensive than other services (though people with .edu addresses can get a $50/year plan). However, it's light-years better than any other service I tried. Among other things, Spideroak manages their own services so that, unlike Mozy and others I tried, the uploading is fast! So it's not impossible, for example, to sync my (fairly large and frequently updated) music selection. Also, my computer suffers no noticeable performance difference when I run it... again, in stark contrast to its competitors. I'm always surprised at how under the radar this program flies.

    Duration of ownership: 4 Months

Strengths: Very secure, 90% open source based, 100% cross platform and great customer service.

    Weaknesses: Could be more polished.

Overall Evaluation: Fantastic product for both soccer moms and server admins.
