Editorial Review of Premiere Elements
A significant improvement over version 7, Adobe Premiere Elements 8 adds file organizing and keywording--plus greater integration with Photoshop Elements--while making it easier to edit and use videos in style.
One very welcome addition to Premiere Elements is the Organizer. Adopted from PRE's sister program Photoshop Elements, the Organizer can view, keyword, and organize videos and photos; it acts as a conduit to both Elements programs from the single interface when both programs are installed. Keywording is automated with Auto Analysis of image content (including Face Recognition) and Smart Tagging (of video quality), starting automatically when files are imported.
The Organizer database and media files can be backed up, shared, archived, and even synced with your other computers, using Adobe's Photoshop.com wizard from within PRE (if the other computers have an Elements 8 program installed). Premiere Elements comes with a Basic one-year membership to Adobe's photo sharing site, Photoshop.com, and 2GB of online storage at the site. For $40 more, a Plus membership gives you 20GB.
PRE provides two ways to create movies from video, Instant Movie and manual creation. Instant Movie uses Smart Tags to create a movie with music and transitions, based upon your selected Flash template. Smart Tags guide the Instant Movie away from using static, blurred, or otherwise undesirable clips. In addition, Premier offers tools such as sliders to adjust clip speed and the number of effects that will be automatically applied. Instant Movie doesn't always produce great movies, but the results tend to be pleasant--if sometimes rough. You can use PRE's manual tools to edit the Instant Movie, or to start your own from scratch.
Other automatic tools include Smart Fix, Smart Trim, and Smart Mix. Smart Fix tries to correct imperfections--such as underexposed clips--flagged by Smart Tags. Smart Trim uses Smart Tags to help it determine what portions of a video should be kept and which should be cut, as well as to weigh the interest of various sections. Smart Trim can be set to work automatically or to mark the areas of video recommended for trim, which the user can then manually trim, adjust, or retain, in an easy-to-use timeline. Smart Mix balances different sound sources so that background music doesn't drown out narration or dialog. In our tests, both Smart Trim and Smart Mix worked seamlessly and easily, taking the drudgery out of important video editing processes. Smart Fix usually did a good job on the most obvious fixable problems.
Still photos can now be added to movies, even if you don't have Photoshop Elements installed. The library of templates, effects, transitions and graphics has been expanded to include animated clip art that can be dragged and dropped into a film clip. The new Motion Tracking can move objects within the video, such as having an animated butterfly flit around a skipping child.
A nice selection of Flash and Acrobat tutorials, categorized by levels of difficulty and type of activity, are accessible from within the interface; alas, they're not context-sensitive. And only a few are available to general users: To access Adobe's full library of lessons, you must purchase a Photoshop.com Plus Membership. Other programs offer such tutorials free to all registered users. Extra templates and transitions will also be available only to Plus Members.
Premiere Elements 8 is an appealing upgrade for anyone interested in easy organizing, editing, and compiling of videos into attractive, fun movies. Given its underlying power combined with greatly improved ease of use, it's a good value, and we like the added value of Photoshop.com--if only Adobe didn't require users to buy a Plus membership to access tutorials.
