Editorial Review of Yoono Desktop

Yoono, the social networking feed mashup application, is releasing radical new updates at lightning speed in an effort to keep up with its fierce competitors, such as Seesmic. The latest version of Yoono, 1.6.2, is the first to include multi-column support. What that means is, for the first time, you can view different networks side by side on the same screen.

I would think that a great new feature like this would have a big honking button somewhere that says "Click me! Get more than one column!" But it's not that easy to find. After fiddling with the add-on and searching the Yoono Web site for about 15 minutes, I finally found the answer: You have to click an icon with three lines on it, in the upper right, next to Minimize. This icon is all but invisible. Once you do find that button and set up multiple columns, they work great. You can choose to have it display your friends feed, your replies feed, or your inbox, depending on the social network.

In addition to multi-column support, Yoono recently added LinkedIn support. LinkedIn is a social networking site for business users, which allows people to network together strictly to further their careers.

Another feature recently added to Yoono is the ability to have multiple accounts running from a single social network. These accounts appear as new icons at the far end of the list. It would be nice if multiple accounts from the same network were adjacent, or better yet, within the same icon and accessible via tab. It makes a little better UI sense if icons are per-network rather than per-account, per-network. Still, it's a bonus to have the option at all.

Yoono is a nice choice for the pure social network breadth it contains. Seesmic, for one, works only with Facebook and Twitter and nothing else. If you've got a good reason to have an account at a lot of places, and want to look at them all easily, Yoono is the way to go. Since LinkedIn support is rare (the programming interface was just released), it's particularly handy to have that integration. Betweens this array of networks and the new multi-column support, Yoono has become my new multi social networking application of choice.

Note: Yoono is also available as a Firefox add-on as well as this standalone client.
