Strengths: Free, allows you to edit PDF's

    Weaknesses: None, really

Overall Evaluation: I am a big fan of Nitro PDF, since it is free and it does allow you to edit and save PDF files. There are updates to the program from time to time, but not as often as Adobe, which gets annoying. It is easy to add a digital signature to your documents. The printer driver works better than cute PDF, which would sometimes cut off the right side of the document. For a free program it is pretty good.

Strengths: Doesn't insist on running at startup

Weaknesses: Awful Microsoft Office type interface

Overall Evaluation: Great in comparison to Acrobat Reader. Every time Reader updates or has a hiccup I have to go delete its "quick launch" from my Startup so it doesn't suck resources. Not Nitro. I don't know where the Reviewer for PC got the idea that the "2010 Office style" was a good thing.

    Strengths: None

    Weaknesses: many

Overall Evaluation: I could not get this program to print to any of the printers I have. The drag and drop did not work as advertised. I could not convert pdf to txt. When I check the user forums for assistance, I find many posts with no answers or requests that the poster submit the file in question.

Strengths: Fast. Ease of use. Wide array of features for a free program. Lack of advertising. The form completion and signature addition is a breeze, and (wow!) my signature was applied on top of the background, not obscuring it - just as a hard copy signature would appear.

Weaknesses: It's a beta test version. Needs out-of-house testing. I'd like it if it could delete pages and merge documents, but I haven't found that capacity yet. I may have to spend $100 for the Nitro Pro to get it. The installation changes the default printer to Nitro PDF Creator (Reader), which, of course will need to be reversed, but it makes it immediately apparent that that feature is included. Caveat: section 18.5 of License Agreement, "Licensee shall return or destroy all versions fo the Licensed Software on the first to occur of ... the date ten (10) days after Nitro's request therefor." (However, I don't recall having to register or provide my email address.)

Overall Evaluation: I'm rating this as a free beta product. It loaded quickly on my Win7 Home Premium OS. I was suspicious of the PC World review (sounded like hype), but I'm glad I gave it a try. Thanks PC World. I suggest going to the Nitro PDF web site, and reading the story of the program development. It has a solid sound to it.

Weaknesses: Far from being faster, it took four times as long to open files than Adobe Reader 8

Strengths: 64 Bit version Beta: Opens pdf files very fast. Does a very good job converting pdf to text; better than any other freeware I've used.

Weaknesses: It doesn't do a perfect pdf to text conversion, especially tabs and multiple spaces - but none of the others I've used does either.

Overall Evaluation: Works great. I'm using the 64 bit Beta. It seems to be stable. If you need 64 bit: http://www.nitroreader.com/download/ and select the radio button for 64 bit.
