Duration of ownership: 2 Years
Strengths: Works well on 64-bit computers, high quality audio output, runs on most operating systems (only tried it on Linux though), free, open source, works on old computers
Weaknesses: Some versions of Audacity are broken/have major bugs, "stable" version is actually less stable than the development version in my experience.
Overall Evaluation: I have used Audacity for almost 2 years now. I have always used it on Linux. I have never tried it on Windows. I have always compiled it from source. I just compiled it on my new laptop (Dell XPS m1330, Intel Core 2 Duo T9500 2.6 GHz, slamd64-current). I am using Audacity to restore quality to old audio cassettes for which the masters have been lost. The repair tool works very well. Amplify allows me to repair sections of the tape that are slightly damaged. I can copy similar-sounding audio from other portions of the tape to hide heavily damaged areas. Audacity is a very good program for restoring old tapes and for general audio recording. I am using onboard audio on all of my computers and I have never had sound card issues like other people have. Overall, I think this is a very good program. There hasn't been a stable release since 2006 though, but this is not a problem for me as I am using the beta version.

Overall Evaluation: FYI. Figured out the problem in my earlier review. If you have a generic on-board soundcard you most likely won't be able to record from any input device besides line-in or microphone. And if you can record from more sources, you probably have an actual sound CARD which should come w/it's own recording and mixing software which may or may not be as good as this.

Strengths: Portability - projects and skills can be exchanged between users on PC, Mac and Linux. Easy to use interface gets jobs done quickly without the hassle of a fully blown DAW package, but providing all the tools you need for day to day audio editing. An audio tool that runs on your desktop, not takes it over.
Weaknesses: I help develop audacity - it doesn't have weaknesses, only unimplemented features :). These are some of the new features for the next major release (1.4.0). To get a preview, try our beta releases: More effects, including a repair function for replacing missing audio where a click or scratch has been removed, Automatic saving and recovery of work, Timer recording for unattended use and numerous improvements to the interface.
Overall Evaluation: To correct the original listing: Audacity is not supported on Windows NT (mainly because the sound drivers often don't work). It is however available for Linux and OSX as well as for windows from our download page: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/. More documentation, guides and tutorials can be found on our Wiki site at http://www.audacityteam.org/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page, as well as in the support mailing list archives http://www.nabble.com/audacity-help-f4506.html

Strengths: FREE! Records music directly from any web stream (internet radio) whether or not your sound card supports recording from its own output. Powerful sound file editor with Many effects available (trim, amplify, etc.). In conjunction with lame_enc.dll (also free and readily available), it will save MP3 files directly. Provides full control of ID3 tags. And it's FREE!
Weaknesses: Documentation is not extensive. Some experience with sound files is helpful.
Overall Evaluation: This is a Very Powerful Sound Recording and Editing Program, and it is FREE. It's a great way to capture music from the web to play on your MP3 player or your car radio that supports CD's of MP3's (e.g., 2007+ GM / Saturn Outlook). Stock up on FREE music before Internet Radio goes the way of Napster!
