Strengths: Powerful, Free
Weaknesses: Takes a bit of time and pain, to learn.
Overall Evaluation: With the GIMP you do a lot. I use it to create web graphics such as buttons, ect. With the GIMP I can make very high quality original images from scratch. Even though I have used it for years, it can be frustrating at times to accomplish exactly what I want. This is because I will try something different than what I would normally do, and the learning curve comes back to bite me. The end results are always worth it. The GIMP is great if you are willing to put some time in and experiment with it. I have used it for many years and I feel like I have not done everything that it is capable of yet. I have seen many improvements over time, it gets better with each new release.

Strengths: Features, features, and more features. I've used Corel and this will do almost anything that Corel will do. Tons of free brushes and plugins. Best of all it is completely free.
Weaknesses: The interface is sometimes hard to access. Also, some plugins don't work well (or at all) even if they come from the GIMP plugin website. Then again there are a lot of commercial programs you could say the same of. As I said you can do almost everything you can in a high end program with the GIMP. The downside is that you have to go through more steps and more menus to do it. I.E. the interface is not as intuitive as a commercial program.
Overall Evaluation: Well worth the download. It really is a Photo Shop quality program, it just takes longer to get the same results because of having to dig through menus.

Strengths: Filters, and the massive amounts of tools one can use, powerful, lots of preferences (i.e. how many processors do you want it to use; max-min cache settings) its free... Open-source
Weaknesses: Uses lots of RAM, on setup it doesn't tell you that it will install about 16 different languages thus causing the final file size to be 67.5 MB opposed to the setup without the translations for 34.5 MB. always click the "Customize" you will save a little on disk space.... also the pictures have a default cache of 200+ MB. I lowered mine (at the expense of lower quality pics) to about 75MB.
Overall Evaluation: This is a great tool (if i had a blazing fast processor!) this is a tool for the true amateur photographer in all of us. Before i downloaded this i used Paint.NET, i think i will try this for a little more and if i dont use it much i will be going back to Paint.NET.

Strengths: Very Powerful. Advanced interface. Excellent user base with ample tutorials. Thorough documentation.
Weaknesses: Used to have to install the GTK, however version 2.4 no longer has that requirement. Portable version (2.4) crashed on me once during use, but have not had that problem with the normal install. Not 16 bit color, not multi-threaded for color. The 16 bit color will be part of the next major overhaul. Don´t know about the multiple processor/multithreaded future. If that is important, Paint.NET is very fast on dual-core+ processors, but it is still 8-bit color. Krita is 16 bit color, but very simple compared to the above two.
Overall Evaluation: I have been using it for a long time. I have only scratched the surface of its capabilities. Warp sharp is a fantastic sharpening plugin, better than most programs. I will never buy another photo editor. If

Strengths: Easier layout to learn than Photoshop, killer features, low low price! (free!) it's open source, so if you want a feature that it doesn't have, you can add it.
Weaknesses: you have to install the gtk runtime before installing the gimp or it won't work.
Overall Evaluation: I love it. It's on all my linux computers by default, it runs on mac as well. why pirate photoshop when there's a better tool..... free.
