Not uncommonly, rootkits are used to hide Trojans, that can then be used to take over your PC without your knowledge.
The free AVG Anti-Root is designed to protect you. It does one thing, and one thing alone: finds and kills rootkits. Run it and it scans your PC, sniffing them out. When it finds any, it removes them. Note that it doesn't work with Windows Vista.

Fri Nov 23 11:44:49 PST 2007 Duration of ownership: 3 Weeks Strengths: Easy to run. Provides a last line of defence for those nasty rootkits that get through Weaknesses: Quite a few false positives. No LIVE protection in free version. Overall Evaluation: So...I have installed a virus scanner, a firewall, and spyware protection. Sure, I feel safe but it's nice to have a program that looks for a specific piece of malware that may have got through. For rootkits, AVG does the trick. It does a great job finding and removing rootkits although the free version has no real-time protection. One must also use caution as I frequently have received false postives on perfectly legit programs like Iolo's System Mechanic. |

Thu Aug 09 16:16:12 PDT 2007 Duration of ownership: 1 Days Strengths: very easy to install and scan with this free tool. Weaknesses: none noted. Overall Evaluation: I have only did one scan, a deep scan, and no rootkits were found on my computer, however I do not doubt that it will be just as effective as all AVG products. Does not appear to be any conflicts with any of my other security tools that I have on my system, eg: anti-virus, adware protection. Think I will be keeping it. |
