Strengths: Very good Detection.
Weaknesses: No mail scan.
Overall Evaluation: Sorry guys but this is a review of the free version which some compare to other free AV systems, and frankly Avira without an incoming mail scanning service doesn't seem to be up to speed.

Overall Evaluation: I tried to tolorate it for a day or two before dumping it and returning to Avast. If these clowns ever figure out that pissing people off isn't good, they will probably have a winner.

Strengths: Has a scanner fast, real time protection, number of updates per day, huge base of viruses and there descriptions( where you can learn the viruses..what can they do it), Interface is very intuitive, doesn't eat much resources, the time of scanner it's very fast( more then 100 files per second)!
Weaknesses: The interface can't be changed...please AVIRA..put this possibility to have a few new interfaces...
Overall Evaluation: Perfect for home and maybe for the office...Superior if we compare with other products, even if you should pay for that product (BitDefender, AVG, Symantec, etc..)

Weaknesses: The nag screen, but it's free. Worth it even with the popup.
Overall Evaluation: I traded in AVG for Avira and have never looked back, and I was with AVG a long time.

Strengths: Good reviews at Cnet.com and Pcmag.com
Weaknesses: Not very intuitive for non expert users. Very DIFFICULT TO UNINSTALL
Overall Evaluation: Look at the user Reviews Scale, is very poor. I suggest to you all that you Consider Avira but with the understanding that you need to be very familiar with the settings and it is a pain to uninstall. Or you can use AVAST FREE EDITION - which is an amazing Anti Anything with 7 different shields and very easy to understand. Don't take my word for it, I am very surprise that PcWorld left it out. Go to PcMag.com or Cnet.com for a review of both Avira and Avast. But trust me on this you will like AVAST

Strengths: Very easy to use, real-time protection, automatic updates, automatic scanning, lets you see the last file or folder scanned with real-time protection, lets you look at all the malware on the program's detection list from inside the program.
Weaknesses: Pops up a window when updating regardless of an automatic check or manual check for updates is run.
Overall Evaluation: Overall, Avira AntiVir Personal is the best anti-virus software I have ever used. I have not experienced any problems with it and numerous times it has detected and quarantined malware it has found on my computer. It also uses less RAM when scanning is done than the scanners of other anti-virus programs. I highly recommend this program to anyone who wants a great, and yet free, anti-virus program.

Strengths: Easy to use, Strong engine has detected numerous viruses in downloads and even some things I burned to CDs after using another (PAID) antivirus!! Updates often. MUCH better than Mcafee! (which as an IT pro, I don't recommend using - you hear that Dell??)
Weaknesses: oversimplified user interface, annoying default "update downloaded" voice, That's about it.
Overall Evaluation: Great product, easy to use, Very thorough! One of the best freeware antivirus programs out there, rivals paid antivirus programs, and perfect in a pinch. It's what I install on my friends' machines when I do pro bono consulting.

Strengths: fast, accurate detections, detects what others don't, easy to use, doesn't slow down your computer, free,
Weaknesses: no boot scan option
Overall Evaluation: AVIRA and AVAST are the best AV software. I don't know what the PC World reviewer was doing when they reviewed this product. There is an email scanner in the free version. I have seen AVIRA and AVAST detect virii that others missed. Norton and McAfee slow down your computer to a useless state. AVIRA and AVAST do not effect your computer's speed as they scan in the background. The reviewer must have missed this too. AVIRA and AVAST both update themselves automatically. There are no features missing in the free versions that are necessary for individual use (as opposed to commercial use). I used to recommend AVG but the free version does not include the rootkit detection which I feel is critical. The only thing that makes AVAST one step better than AVIRA is the boot time scan but AVIRA still detects more than AVAST. I am not your average user. I download virii and test these programs. My business is to tune-up and remove virii from home computers. If you are paying for an anti-virus program then you are paying too much. I recommend AVIRA and AVAST. Your choice, flip a coin. The reviewer for PC world sounds like she is on someone else's payroll.

Strengths: Very stealhty... not noisy at all, you hardly even know it's there... very good detection...
Weaknesses: No antispyware...
Overall Evaluation: This is, by far, one of the better AV programs, free or paid... If you take a few minutes to understand it, you will not be disappointed...Some think because it has no email scanner that you can easily get a virus, NOT true... If you configure it to scan ALL files on read & write, it will scan all attachments as you open them. So email scanning is really not that important and the nag screen can be disabled if you know what you are doing...Overall, this is one of the better programs I have used...I have set all the setting to MAXIMUM settings and have had very few false positives and I also set it to check for updates 4 times a day. This FREE version is really all that most people would need...

Strengths: Best in it's class. very few false positives if any.Very small footprint. Scans on demand or scheduled. Easy to set-up. Nice interface.Up-dates everyday.IT"S FREE.
Weaknesses: No e-mail scanning. Pop-up on up-date.
Overall Evaluation: I have used others,Paid & free. This is the only one that does the job Right.VERY small foot print as compared to others. As far the pop-up goes when up-dating,I look forward to seeing it because I'm sure that I'm well protected. If you don't want to see this pop-up well, I'm not going to tell you Not to Google it.Avira free has it's own forum if you run in some kind of problems. The folks there are very nice and understanding not to mention knowledgeable. If you couple this AV with a Real Time Antispyware (preferably SUPERAntispyware)and a good Firewall, your chances of getting infected has diminished considerably.Providing that your web surfing habits are honorable. Also,Avira is compatible with WIN9X/NT/2000/ME/XP and Vista. Not too many AV are this compatible and Good at the same time.I do not hesitate to recommend Avira Antivirus when asked FLASHORN.

Strengths: Very thorough. Can schedule scans. Easy to 'set and forget'
Weaknesses: Pop-up ads can get a little annoying. Does not actively scan e-mail attachments prior to downloading.
Overall Evaluation: For the longest time, I have been flip flopping as to which free antivirus software is the best between AVG and Avast. Both are great but I found that with both programs, I was getting many false positives while a few (mind you...it is very, very few) viruses were still getting through. In addition to this, you can't schedule regular scans using Avast (although the interface is really slick!). So, I was looking around at various review sites and found this one. It does everything that I need an antivirus program to do: it does a thorough job, monitors my system, scans on boot-ups, and runs scheduled scans. The only drawback is that it does not scan my incoming e-mail attachments but this causes me little pain as I have another application doing that for me. There is also an annoying pop-up ad that occurs everytime you update the program asking you to upgrade. A simple click on 'OK' makes it go away...until the next update. However, despite these two very minor drawbacks, I would highly recommend this software. As far as I am concerned it is the BEST free antivirus software you can get!
