Strengths: Provides reliable internet protection by creating a VPN between you and their (hopefully secure) servers. Excellent for use with 'hot spots.' coffee houses, etc.
Weaknesses: Some annoying ads that can be largely eliminated, depending on your browser. Also, two of the three services HSS installs can be changed from "Automatic" to "Manual," retaining full functionality. Occasionally, it prevents complete connection to Hotmail. File transfers are slowed and may be somewhat limited.
Overall Evaluation: A must-have for anyone who connects to an open wireless network - or even one that may be password protected, yet full of a wide number of disparate users.

Weaknesses: slower Surfing/Ads

Strengths: seems to do what it says. Pop up ads are the cost of using it but I can click them off easily.
Weaknesses: some places it seems not to connect or be blocked.But overall I say it works fine. Maybe something else will come along that is a free app and replace it but not sure of any at the moment.

Overall Evaluation: I don't know if you can trust it.The way I understand it, it works as a middleman. Example, you want to make a phone call, but you don't want the person you are calling to know your phone #. So you call someone & tell them to call the person for you with their other phone line. You tell them to put the 2 phones together. Now the phone # can not be traced to you. BUT can you trust the person who made the call for for you?? The service is good to have but I wouldn't trust it for online banking or credit cards, until I find out more about them. That's why I am here right now, I am trying to find out more info about the company. It's a free service, so if your personal information gets out, you take them to court, Their lawyer says "how much did pay for this service",Nothing,, "Case Dismissed".

Overall Evaluation: DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT. I downloaded it and tried to install it. Then spent better part of a day trying to uninstall. Finally found later version, installed that, uninstalled whole mess

Weaknesses: 1. disconnects at random times 2. large banner ads 3. pages get stuck or never load 4. broswer windows load slowly 5. lot of Internet Explorer can not display the webpage 6. can not close banner ads (x usually hidden from site) 7.can not comment on blog pages 8. flagged as a spam ip address 9. listed on honeypot list 10. listed on spam list 11. banner ad takes up large amount of space on page 12. only works for a couple of hours 13. constant pop-ups even with pop-up blocker (zwinky & glitter names) 14. computer moves really slow 15. Windows warns of downloading this software
Overall Evaluation: The only reason I give it 1 star is because there is no zero star rating. This is one of the worst software downloads. This only works for a couple of hours and then it just stops. I have downloaded this more than 5 times and each time it gets worst. I tried connecting for over 3 hours and still can not get an connection. Sometimes you have to enter your log in information twice and I do not understand that. If it can not load the 2 inch banner page it will give you pop-up banner ads. So sick & tired of Zwinky and Glitter Names pop-ups. The web pages are constantly loading and it is because Hotspot Shield is trying to load there ads. It is even on top when you are on Facebook or Twitter. This is a good concept but the execution is bad, can deal with the banner ads but can not deal with the constantly disconnecting and not being able to connect for hours. Will try to find another product, should have know that something that was free would not work correctly.

Strengths: Great idea, easy to use, free.
Weaknesses: Install of this version crashed my Vista machine
Overall Evaluation: Newer version is available, installed successfully. As you would expect, it may slow you down, as it basically redirects you to a proxy server. Still, when you need it, it's nice to have it.
